Not only did it release Ubuntu Phone,Snappy Core, its cloud offering continued to grow andUbuntu 15.04 was released, introducing seismic changes to itsGNU/Linux system. The biggest introduction is that swear word (at least tosome)Systemd.Love it or hate it,Systemdis here and it’s hereto stay. With the introduction of Debian 8, the init on all themajor distro branches will beSystemd, and this wasn’t a hostileinvasion, it was chosen democratically and on technical merit.By the time you’re reading this, the only major distros notusingSystemdwill be Slackware, PCLinuxOS and Gentoo(whereSystemdis an option). Now that Ubuntu with all of itsmany, many dependant offshoots has adoptedSystemd,we’llsee it appear in all the major – and not so major – distros. Wethink this is a good thing,SysViniton Linux is over 18-years oldand is a creaking infrastructure of scripts, which certainly didn’tkeep to the Unix philosophy of doing things well or simply. So this issue we’re delving into Ubuntu 15.04; pulling it apartand revealing its new inner workings. You’ll discover how to getit up and running, how to take control ofSystemdand the newflavours of Ubuntu that are available like Mate. It’s always an exciting time and just as exciting is theintroduction of our new regular Raspberry Pi section on page60. Instead of just dropping Pi reviews and tutorials around themagazine we’re combining these into a regular section, so youalways know where to get your fix of Pi each month. As it’s alsosuch an important force now in UK education, we’ll be keepingtabs on what the Raspberry Pi Foundation gets up to eachmonth right there, too.Just as exciting is the review of the sleek Dell XPS 13Developers Edition, which comes with Ubuntu installed, the newGoogle Pixel (2015) and a new ASUS Chromebook 15. There’sno doubt it’s an exciting time to be part of the Linux world.Jonni BidwellI kinda wish they’d make it brown again. And give up with Unity. If you want a weirddesktop that half thinks it’s running on amobile device then Gnome 3 is perfectlysuitable. Oh and maybe bring back acompetitive version of the Ubuntu Onecloud storage. Not sure if it would be calledUbuntu Two, Ubuntutu or Ubuntu Zero.Matt BeilbyWith each iteration, I respect whatCanonical are doing with the Unityinterface just a little bit more. But therelease that I’m waiting for is the onethat finally makes it feel as if that respectis mutual. Even after all these years, I stillyearn for the comfortable inefficiency ofa horizontal launcher.Les PounderI’d love to see a version of Ubuntu that isbuilt for the maker community. Somethingthat has Arduino, 3D printers, prototypingsoftware etc all installed as standard andready for me to get tinkering. This wouldenable many to dip their toe into the greatmaker culture that’s growing while loweringthe barrier to entry.Mayank SharmaUbuntu One! Sure, cloud storage servicesare a dime a dozen these days butCanonical’s service kind of grew on me.I thought it was wonderfully integrated intothe desktop by the time it folded. Even itsmobile app was nicely done and offeredDRM-free music on its music store, whichwas an obvious plus.Shashank SharmaI’d go for flawless voice activation, alongwith maybe a head, all limbs and a sunnydisposition. It would make the perfectautomaton. But make it so the keyboardjunkies can still muck about with thecommand line, in case they need to tweakits personality routines. And throw in awristwatch, because they’re all the rage.Neil MohrEditorneil.mohr@futurenet.comOn digital and print, see p30www.linuxformat.comJune 2015LXF1983Subscribe & save!ContentsReviewsAsus Chromebook c300..16A sweet next-gen Chromebook that offersthe power and features without the price.“Hack with only Linux in mind and experience the freedom it offers.” – Lennart PoetteringDell XPS 13 Dev Edition..17Here’s the main event, the new 2015 DellXPS 13 shipping with Ubuntu.
